It lived in fresh water. This fish lived during the Devonian period. It was a lobe-finned fish. This means its fins had fleshy parts.

Hyneria was a very big hunter. One kind, H. lindae, may reach 3.5 meters long. It had a long, shallow lower jaw. Its teeth were stout and strong. Some teeth were like large fangs.

The fish lived in murky water. This water was hard to see through. Hyneria had large sensory canals on its head. These paths helped it find prey. Its body was covered in cycloid scales.

Scientists found fossils in Pennsylvania. They found parts of the skull and shoulder. These fossils came from the Red Hill Shale. A second kind, H. udlezinye, was named in 2023. It was found in South Africa. Hyneria is the largest lobe-finned fish in the Red Hill Shale.
