This fish is famous for a strange fin on its back. The fin looked like an anvil or an ironing board. This part is called a spine-brush complex. It had many small spikes on it. These spikes might have scared away predators. Some think the fin helped with mating. Scientists also think it helped the fish hold onto bigger animals.

Stethacanthus had a long part on its side fin. This was called a fin whip. We do not know why it had this whip. It also had many small teeth. These teeth had five points on them. The fish was a carnivore. This means it ate meat. It likely ate small fish and other sea life. Because of its big fin, it was probably a slow swimmer. It may have lived near the bottom of the sea.
