A long time ago, a strange fish lived in the sea.

This fish lived about 290 to 270 million years ago. It was a large, shark-like animal.

Its name, Helicoprion, means "spiral saw." This name comes from its most famous part. It had a special tooth whorl. A whorl is a set of teeth that grows in a spiral.

For a long time, scientists did not know where these teeth went. New studies show they were in the lower jaw. The teeth helped the fish grab and slice soft prey. They may have helped it eat creatures with shells, too.

Fossils of this fish are found all over the world. Many were found in Russia and Australia. Some were even found in Idaho.

Scientists once thought there were many different types of Helicoprion. A big study in 2013 changed this. Now, experts only recognize three species. These are H. bessonowi, H. davisii, and H. ergassaminon. They tell the difference by looking at the tooth shapes.
