People have been studying these fossils for over a hundred years. A gold prospector named Mr. Davis found the first specimen in Western Australia. He found it near a river called the Gascoyne River.

Later, Alexander Karpinsky named the genus in 1899. He used fossils found in Russia and Australia. The name Helicoprion comes from Greek words for "spiral" and "saw." He named the first species H. bessonowi after its discoverer, Alexander Bessonov.

Helicoprion is the type genus of the Helicoprionidae family. This family is defined by unique structures called tooth whorls. For a long time, scientists debated where these tooth whorls were located.

They did not know how the teeth functioned in the animal's mouth. Recent studies changed this understanding by examining specimens that preserved jaw cartilage. These fossils show that the whorls were positioned in the lower jaw.

A gold prospector named Mr. Davis discovered it in a tributary of the Gascoyne River in Western Australia. In 1899, Alexander Karpinsky first named the genus. Other researchers, like Henry Woodward, initially misidentified fossils as belonging to a different genus called Edestus. Throughout the 20th century, various paleontologists moved species between different genera like Campyloprion and Toxoprion. It was not until later studies that the true identity of Helicoprion was firmly established. This shows how scientific understanding grows as new evidence is analyzed.

Helicoprion fossils provide great insight into ancient ocean life. These fossils are found in marine deposits all over the world. This tells us that Helicoprion was a pelagic animal, meaning it lived in the open ocean.
