Hybodonts lived through many different eras of Earth's history. The earliest fossils come from the late Devonian period, about 360 million years ago.

They were most common during the Triassic period. During this time, they lived in both salt water and fresh water. Some species lived only in rivers, while others moved between the ocean and rivers. Hybodonts are part of a group called Euselachii. This group also includes Neoselachii, which contains all modern sharks and rays. Hybodonts are considered the sister group to Neoselachii. This means they share a close common ancestor. These fish were incredibly successful for millions of years. They lived from the late Devonian period until the end of the Cretaceous period.

Because hybodonts had cartilaginous skeletons, their bodies usually disintegrated after death. Scientists often identify them using fossils of teeth and fin spines. These parts are more likely to be preserved in the fossil record. Teeth were once used to divide hybodonts into two main groups. One group had teeth called osteodont teeth. These had sharp, pointed tips and lacked a pulp cavity. The other group had teeth called orthodont teeth. These had a different shape and included a pulp cavity.

Different species used these teeth for different tasks. Some teeth were used for tearing or clutching prey. Others were flat for crushing hard shells, a behavior called durophagy. One species, Hybodus hauffianus, even had stomach contents showing it ate belemnites, which were squid-like creatures.

Hybodonts had very specific physical features that set them apart. They possessed two dorsal fins, which are fins on the back. Each of these fins was preceded by a sharp fin spine. These spines were long, curved, and often had hooked denticles on the back. Denticles are tiny, tooth-like structures.

Some hybodonts, like the genus Onychoselache, might have even been able to move on land. This is because they had very well-developed pectoral fins. Some species also used specific locations as nurseries. In the Triassic Madygen Formation of Kyrgyzstan, for example, eggs were likely laid near lakeshores. The young would hatch and grow there before moving into deeper water.

Hybodonts also had a unique way of reproducing. Instead of giving birth to live young, many laid egg cases. These cases are often assigned to the genus Palaeoxyris. The cases were shaped like a tapered tube with twisted bands in the middle. They even had a small tendril at one end. This tendril allowed the egg to attach to underwater plants or other surfaces. This helped keep the eggs safe in freshwater or brackish environments.

The history of hybodont discovery began in the nineteenth century. In 1837, a scientist named Agassiz first described them using isolated teeth.

Later, in 1911, Karl von Zittel distinguished them from living sharks. For a long time, researchers thought hybodonts were closely related to the modern order Heterodontiformes. However, newer studies have refuted this idea. We now know they are a distinct group within the total group elasmobranchs. Their evolutionary path is a major part of understanding how modern sharks developed.

Hybodonts were once the dominant group of sharks in the world. They reached their highest diversity during the Triassic period. They were common in both marine and freshwater settings during the Triassic and Early Jurassic. However, things changed during the Middle Jurassic. As Neoselachians, the group containing modern sharks, began to diversify, hybodonts became less common in the open ocean. Modern sharks likely had more effective ways of moving and using their jaws. By the end of the Cretaceous, the hybodonts finally went extinct.
