Long ago, a fish called Osteolepis lived in Scotland.

Its name means "bone" and "scale." This fish had large, square scales. The scales and head plates had a thin layer of bone. This layer is called cosmine. It had small tubes called canals. These tubes led to pores on the skin. These pores likely helped the fish feel vibrations in the water.

Osteolepis lived in a calm freshwater lake.

Sometimes the lake water would dry up. At other times, the water lost its oxygen. This is called an anoxic event. These events caused many fish to die. Because of this, many fish fossils are found together.

This fish was a lobe-finned fish. It was a distant relative of tetrapods, which are four-limbed animals. Osteolepis likely ate small things like mollusks or tiny bugs. Larger fish, like Cheirolepis, may have eaten it. Scientists have studied many types of these fossils. Most names they gave were later found to be the same fish. Today, only one species is still used by scientists.
