The very first fish were jawless. We call these animals Agnatha. They did not have mouths that could bite. Instead, they used filter-feeding to eat. This means they took in tiny bits of food from the water.

Some early jawless fish were covered in armor. These were called ostracoderms. They had hard plates to protect their heads and gills.

Later, new kinds of fish appeared with jaws. One group was called placoderms. These were armored fish that lived in the sea. Having a jaw gave fish a big advantage. It helped them eat in new ways. During the Devonian period, many different fish grew. This time is known as the Age of Fishes.

Some fish had strong, bony fins. These fins helped them move through the water. These fish eventually led to the first tetrapods. Tetrapods are animals with four limbs. This group includes modern birds, reptiles, and mammals. Many fish species died out during extinction events. However, bony fish and sharks still thrive today.

Fish are some of the most important living things on our planet. They began to evolve about 530 million years ago during the Cambrian explosion.

This was a time when many different kinds of animals appeared. The very first ancestors of fish were likely very simple. They had a basic body plan with a head, a tail, and a primitive backbone.

These early creatures were called chordates. They did not have jaws to bite with. Instead, they used filter-feeding to eat tiny bits of food near the seabed.

Evolution happened in many small steps over millions of years. The first fish lineages were the Agnatha, or jawless fish.

Some of these fish, like the ostracoderms, grew hard bony plates for armor. These plates covered their heads and gills to keep them safe.

Later, a huge change happened when fish developed jaws. This likely happened during the late Ordovician period. A jaw allowed fish to bite and eat much better. This change helped them survive and find new ways to live.

Scientists have used fossils to piece together this long story. In the 1830s, a Swiss anatomist named Louis Agassiz found armored fish fossils in Scotland.

He struggled to name them at first. He thought they might be like modern catfish. However, he realized they had no movable jaws. In 1844, he named them ostracoderms. This helped us understand how much fish have changed over time.

Many different groups of fish appeared during the Silurian and Devonian periods.

The Devonian period is often called the "Age of Fishes." During this time, the placoderms were huge armored fish. One giant, Dunkleosteus, could grow up to seven meters long.

Other fish groups appeared too, like the cartilaginous fish and bony fish. Bony fish eventually split into ray-finned fish and lobe-finned fish. These groups represent the many paths life can take.

Fish are closely linked to almost all land animals today. Some lobe-finned fish had strong, bony fins and lungs.

These fish could even crawl onto land for a short time. This led to the rise of tetrapods, which are four-limbed animals. This group includes amphibians, reptiles, birds, and even mammals. When you see a bird or a dog, you are seeing a distant relative of those ancient fish. The history of fish is actually part of our own history.

It began approximately 530 million years ago during the Cambrian explosion. This was a period of rapid animal diversification. The first ancestors of fish were likely simple chordates.

Genera such as Haikouichthys and Myllokunmingia represent these early vertebrates. They possessed a basic body plan including a notochord and rudimentary vertebrae. They also had well-defined heads and tails. However, these early creatures lacked jaws. They relied on filter-feeding near the seabed to survive.

The first major lineage of fish is the Agnatha, or jawless fish.

These animals did not have hinged mouths for biting. Some early agnathans, like the conodonts, resembled eel-like creatures. Conodonts appeared about 520 million years ago. They ranged in length from one centimeter to 40 centimeters. Other jawless fish, known as ostracoderms, developed heavy bony armor.

This armor consisted of small polygonal plates. These plates shielded the head and the gills. Ostracoderms used a muscular pharynx to create suction. This suction pulled small prey into their mouths. Most of these ancient jawless lineages eventually went extinct.

A major turning point occurred during the late Ordovician period. This was when the first jawed vertebrates likely emerged.

The fossil record shows two main groups in the Silurian period. The first were the placoderms, which were armored fish that evolved from ostracoderms. The second were the Acanthodii, also known as spiny sharks. The development of a hinged jaw provided a massive evolutionary advantage. Scientists are not entirely sure why. It may have provided greater biting force. It might have improved respiration or both.

The Devonian period is famously known as the "Age of Fishes."

During this time, fish variety increased dramatically. The placoderms and lobe-finned fish saw huge diversification. Some placoderms became massive giants. The Dunkleosteus could reach lengths of up to seven meters. However, the Devonian also brought significant extinction events. The Late Devonian extinction wiped out the ostracoderms and placoderms. This changed the course of marine life forever. Only a few jawless groups, like lampreys and hagfish, survived to the modern era.

Bony fish, or Osteichthyes, also appeared during the late Silurian.

This group eventually split into two distinct lineages. The first is the Actinopterygii, known as ray-finned fish. The second is the Sarcopterygii, or lobe-finned fish. The Sarcopterygii are especially important to the history of life on land. These fish possessed strong, bony fins and often had lungs. This allowed them to breathe air and move in shallow water. These traits were essential for the transition to land.

The evolution of lobe-finned fish led to the rise of tetrapods.

Tetrapods are four-limbed vertebrates. This group includes modern amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. Transitional species first appeared in the early Devonian. By the late Devonian, the first true tetrapods had emerged. This connection shows that the history of fish is deeply linked to our own. The bony fins of ancient fish provided the structural foundation for the limbs we use today.

Extinction events have shaped fish diversity throughout natural history. The Ordovician–Silurian extinction caused the loss of many early species. Later, the Permian–Triassic extinction wiped out the spiny sharks. The Triassic–Jurassic extinction led to the disappearance of the conodonts. Even more recently, the Cretaceous–Paleogene and the Holocene extinctions have impacted fish variety. These events act as filters, determining which lineages survive and which vanish. Understanding these patterns helps scientists see how life adapts to a changing planet.
