The inside of the fin had strong bones. The largest bone is called the humerus. This is the same name for the upper arm bone in humans. It also had a radius and an ulna. These are the bones in the forearm.

The fins even had wrist bones called the intermedium and the ulnare. These allowed the animal to flex its fins. This helped it prop itself up in the water.

Even the middle of the body was changing.

Tiktaalik had a long torso with about 45 pairs of ribs. These ribs overlapped each other. This helped support its body weight outside of the water. Its hips were also much larger than those of other fish.

It lived approximately 375 million years ago. Scientists classify Tiktaalik as a crucial transition fossil. This means it represents a link in evolution between swimming fish and four-legged animals, known as tetrapods.

It belongs to a group of bony fish called Osteichthyes. While it possessed scales and gills, it also had features that suggest it was moving toward life on land. These mixed characteristics help researchers understand how vertebrates first began to inhabit terrestrial environments.

The anatomy of Tiktaalik shows a fascinating mix of fish and land-animal traits. Its head was low and flat, similar to the shape of a modern salamander.

A major discovery was that Tiktaalik was one of the earliest known fish to possess a neck. In most fish, the shoulder girdle is attached to the skull, which limits head movement. In Tiktaalik, the pectoral girdle was separate from the skull. This separation allowed the animal to move its head independently to hunt prey in shallow waters. Additionally, the skull featured indentations called otic notches. These may have housed spiracles, which are openings that suggest the creature had primitive lungs to breathe air.

The fins of Tiktaalik provide a detailed look at how limbs might have evolved.

These fins were not just for paddling like a typical fish. They contained a robust internal skeleton surrounded by thin bony rays called lepidotrichia. The internal structure included a large bone called the humerus, which forms the upper arm. Following this were the radius and ulna, which make up the forearm.

Tiktaalik also possessed wrist-like bones called the intermedium and the ulnare. These bones allowed the fin to flex. This mobility would have helped the animal anchor itself to the bottom of a fast current or prop itself up in shallow water.

Researchers have long debated how digits, or fingers and toes, actually formed. One theory is the digital arch model. This model suggests that digits evolved from specific bones in the fin called postaxial radials.

Tiktaalik shows some evidence for this, as it had at least eight rectangular distal radials arranged in a pattern similar to fingers. However, its central bone axis, known as the metapterygial axis, remained straight. This creates a complex puzzle for paleontologists. It remains to be seen if these radial bones are truly the direct ancestors of the fingers seen in modern land animals.

The middle section of Tiktaalik's body also showed significant changes. Its torso was elongated and contained about 45 pairs of ribs.

These ribs were large and overlapped one another through blade-like flanges. This overlapping structure, called imbrication, helped support the animal's body weight when it was not fully submerged in water. Its pelvis was also much larger than that of earlier fish, reaching a size nearly equal to its shoulder girdle. While the pelvis was still a single bone, its orientation was halfway between the rear-facing sockets of fish and the sideways-facing sockets of tetrapods.

The discovery of Tiktaalik was a major scientific event.
