Hydrozoa are tiny animals that live in the water.

Most of them live in the salty sea. A few live in fresh water. They are related to corals and jellyfish.

Many hydrozoans live in colonies. A colony is a big group of small animals. These animals are all connected. They use tube-like parts to share food.

Some colonies look like fans or trees. Some can grow to be several meters long. Some have a special float. This float lets the group drift in the water.

These animals often have two life stages. The first stage is a polyp. Polyps stay in one place. They can catch food with tentacles. The second stage is a medusa. A medusa looks like a small jellyfish. It has an umbrella shape. It uses muscles to move through the water. Some medusae live for only a few hours. Others live for many days. One special group can even change back to a young stage. This is a very rare way to live.
