Salps are clear sea animals. They have barrel-shaped bodies.

They move using jet propulsion. This is a way to move by pushing water. They squeeze their soft bodies to pump water through them. This helps them swim through the sea.

Salps eat phytoplankton. These are tiny plants that live in the water. The salp uses filters to catch the food.

Salps have a complex life cycle. They change from one form to another. One form is a single animal called an oozooid. This animal makes a chain of many small salps. The chain members are called blastozooids. They stay joined together while they swim. They also grow new baby oozooids.

Salps are often found in cold seas. They can form very large groups. These groups can be even bigger than krill. Some small fish swim inside salps to stay safe.
