The Huguenots were a group of French Protestants. They followed the Reformed tradition of faith. This way of thinking was started by John Calvin.

Many people wonder where their name came from. Some think it comes from a Swiss leader named Besançon Hugues. Others believe it was a mix of Dutch and German words. One idea says it was a mean nickname used by others. It might even relate to old legends about spirits. Regardless of the origin, the name became a symbol of courage.

Life for the Huguenots was often very difficult. They lived mostly in the southern and western parts of France.

In the mid-1500s, they were a growing group. By the year 1572, they made up about 10% of the French population. This was roughly two million people. They had about 1,400 churches across the country. As they showed their faith more openly, many people grew angry. This led to many years of fighting and conflict.

These conflicts were known as the French Wars of Religion. They happened in stages between 1562 and 1598.

Important leaders helped guide the Huguenot people during this time. Jeanne d'Albret was one of these leaders. Another leader was the future King Henry IV. He eventually became Catholic so he could be the king. The wars finally ended with the Edict of Nantes in 1598. This rule gave Huguenots rights to their own religion and politics.

Things became much harder under King Louis XIV. He wanted everyone in France to be Catholic. He used a method called the Dragonnades to force people to change. In 1685, he signed the Edict of Fontainebleau. This rule took away all the rights of the Protestants. Many Huguenots had to flee France to find safety. They became refugees in other countries. This caused a "brain drain" because many talented people left.

By the late 1700s, things began to change again. The persecution of Protestants slowly came to an end. In 1787, the Edict of Versailles was signed. Two years later, in 1789, new laws were made. The Revolutionary Declaration of the Rights of Man gave Protestants equal rights.
