The Puritans were a group of English Protestants during the 16th and 17th centuries.

They wanted to make the Church of England more purely Protestant. They felt the church still had too many Catholic practices. These people sought a more intense way to worship. They focused on personal piety and holy living. Some people used the word "Puritan" as a mean name for them.

However, the followers themselves used different names. They often called themselves "the godly," "saints," or "God's children."

Puritan beliefs were not all the same. They were divided into different groups based on how to run a church. Some liked the way bishops led the church. Others preferred a system led by elders called presbyterianism. Some even wanted small, independent churches called congregational churches.

Some Puritans wanted to fix the national church from the inside. These people were called non-separating Puritans. Other groups, known as Separatists, believed the church was too corrupt. They thought it was better to leave and start new groups entirely.

History shows that Puritans became a very strong political force. In the 1630s, they worked with merchants and the parliamentary opposition.

This helped them gain power during the First English Civil War from 1642 to 1646. During this time, leaders like Oliver Cromwell held great influence. The movement also had many famous thinkers and theologians.

Names like John Owen and Richard Baxter were part of this world. Their ideas about how to live and worship were very strong and definite.

Many Puritans eventually left England to find a new life.

They moved to the colonies in New England to build their own communities. In these new lands, their way of life lasted for a very long time. While the movement changed in England, it stayed strong in America. Some of their ideas even helped shape the Church of England later on. They rejected certain Catholic traditions to focus on their own specific doctrines. Their influence helped create many modern religious groups like the Congregationalists.

Today, we can see how Puritan ideas changed the world. Some people think Puritans were just very strict or disliked fun.

However, historians note they actually supported marriage and family life. They simply wanted to follow their faith very closely in everything. Their history is linked to the start of the American colonies. It is also linked to the big changes in English government. Understanding them helps us see how people fight for their deepest beliefs.
