The Protectorate was a unique period in British history. It was a republic that lasted from 16 December 1653 to 25 May 1659. During this time, the kingdoms of England, Scotland, and Ireland were joined together. They were officially called the Commonwealth of England, Scotland, and Ireland.

This was the first time one single government ruled the entire British Isles. The government was led by a person called the Lord Protector. This leader acted as the head of state for the whole union.

To make this new government work, leaders used a document called the Instrument of Government. This was a new set of rules for how to run the country. It made Oliver Cromwell the Lord Protector for his whole life.

He had the power to call meetings of Parliament. However, he still had to work with a group called the Council of State. To keep order in England, Cromwell divided the land into military districts. He appointed fifteen Major-Generals to rule these areas. These men were responsible for collecting taxes and keeping the peace.

Oliver Cromwell was the most important figure of this era. He was sworn in as Lord Protector on 16 December 1653. He was a popular leader among the soldiers in the army. In 1657, Parliament even offered to make him King. Cromwell thought about this for six weeks. He eventually said no because he believed God did not want the monarchy to return.

Instead, he had a special ceremony at Westminster Hall. He wore a purple robe and used a sword of justice to show his power.

Rules for the different lands were often very different. In Scotland, the English Parliament dissolved the Scottish Parliament. Scotland was given 30 seats to sit in the Parliament in London.

In Ireland, the government was much stricter at first. Many people lost their land and were forced to move. Later, Cromwell sent his son Henry to Ireland to try a kinder approach. The Protectorate also reached far across the ocean. It included colonies like Virginia and the islands in the West Indies.

This era changed how people lived and how the world saw Britain. Cromwell even changed laws about religion. He allowed Jewish people to return to England after 350 years.
