It took place between 1642 and 1651. These wars were part of a larger struggle called the Wars of the Three Kingdoms. This struggle involved England, Scotland, and Ireland. Two main groups fought for control of the land. The Royalists supported King Charles I.

The Parliamentarians wanted Parliament to have more power in the government. This conflict changed how the kingdoms were ruled for a long time. It helped set the path toward a parliamentary monarchy.

Fighting happened in different ways across the land.

Soldiers used a tactic called pike and shot. Musketeers carried guns called matchlock muskets. These guns could hit targets up to 300 yards away. Musketeers often stood in three rows to reload while others fired. Pike men stood near them with very long sticks. These pikes protected the musketeers from soldiers on horses. Cavalry units also fought on the sides of the infantry.

Some cavalry were fast and skilled. Others were more disciplined and stayed together as a unit.

The trouble began because of how the government worked.

King Charles I believed in the divine right of kings. This meant he thought God chose him to rule. He often disagreed with Parliament about money and laws. Parliament could help the King raise taxes. However, the King could also end Parliament's meetings. Charles I ruled without Parliament for eleven years. This time was called his personal rule. Many people were unhappy with this way of ruling.

Different places supported different sides during the wars.

Royalists held the countryside and many cathedral cities. These included places like York, Chester, and Oxford. They also held parts of northern and western England. Parliamentarians were strong in busy ports and industrial areas. They held much of southern and eastern England. The war reached a huge scale for the people living there. Between 120,000 and 150,000 soldiers were in the field during campaigns. This was a very large part of the population.

Leaders made big choices that changed history.

Oliver Cromwell led the New Model Army. This army was very disciplined and worked as one unit. They won many important battles against the Royalists. The first civil war ended in June 1646. Later, Charles I was executed in January 1649. This led to the start of the Commonwealth of England. After more fighting, the wars ended in 1651 at Worcester. The British Isles became a unitary state for a while. Eventually, the Stuart family returned to the throne in 1660.
