Cromwell's rise to power happened in several steps. First, he became a member of Parliament. Then, he joined the army to fight in the English Civil War. He showed he was a great leader of soldiers on horses. After his army won, the King was removed from power. This led to a new way of ruling called the Commonwealth of England.

Cromwell's life connects to how modern governments work. He lived during a time when people were fighting over the power of the King. His actions helped lead to the idea that Parliament should have a say in ruling. His religious beliefs as an Independent also influenced English life. Today, you can still see his influence in history books. A statue of him stands outside the Houses of Parliament in London.
