He was born on January 17, 1612, at Denton Hall in Yorkshire. His family had been in England since the 13th century. His father was Ferdinando Fairfax, the 2nd Lord Fairfax of Cameron. Because of his dark hair, his loyal soldiers called him "Black Tom."

He grew up to be a man of great skill and honor.

Fairfax learned how to be a soldier in the Netherlands. He served under a general named Horace Vere during the Eighty Years' War. This time in the Netherlands was like a school for soldiers. While there, he fought in the siege of Bois-le-Duc. He also met many men who would later lead armies in England. In 1637, he married Anne, who was the daughter of Horace Vere.

In 1642, a big fight called the English Civil War began. This war was between King Charles I and the Parliament. Fairfax chose to support the Parliament. At first, he worked with his father in the north of England. He fought in many battles, like the Battle of Marston Moor in 1644. During that battle, he was hurt but kept fighting alongside Oliver Cromwell.

This victory helped the Parliament win control of the north.

In 1645, Parliament created a new group called the New Model Army. They chose Fairfax to be the commander-in-chief. He was very good at his job and led many wins. One big victory was at the Battle of Naseby in June 1645. His leadership helped force the King to surrender in 1646.

Many people in London cheered for him when he arrived in the city. He was even given a beautiful jewel set with diamonds.

Later, things became very difficult for Fairfax. Some people in the army wanted to put the King on trial. Fairfax did not want to help with the trial or the King's death. He tried to stop it, but he could not. He resigned from his job in 1650 to live on his estate. In 1660, he helped bring King Charles II back to the throne. He lived a quiet life after that until he died in 1671.
