These fights are called the English Civil War. Two groups fought for control. One group was the Royalists. They supported King Charles I.

The other group was the Parliamentarians. They wanted Parliament to have more power in the government.

Both sides had different strengths. Royalists held many areas in the countryside. Parliamentarians held many busy ports and cities. Soldiers used a way of fighting called pike and shot.

Musketeers used guns called muskets. Pike men used long sticks to protect them.

One important leader was Oliver Cromwell.

He led the New Model Army. This was a very disciplined group of soldiers. They won many big battles. The war ended with the King being executed in 1649. After that, England became a Commonwealth. This meant it was a new kind of state. Eventually, the wars changed how England and Scotland were ruled.
