In this tradition, each local church is independent and runs its own affairs. This is called congregational polity. Members of a local church have the right to decide how they worship. They also choose their own leaders and officers. They do not let outside people interfere with their decisions. This way of life is based on a belief called the priesthood of all believers. This means every believer can find wisdom and guidance directly.

There are specific things that Congregationalists do during their services. They practice two main sacraments, which are special religious acts. These are baptism and the Lord's Supper. Many Congregationalists practice infant baptism. They believe there is no difference between baptizing an infant and a believer. The Lord's Supper is usually celebrated once or twice every month. They do not ask saints to speak for them. Some of their famous songs include "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross." These hymns are known and loved by many different types of Christians around the world.

This tradition has a very long history that began in England. It grew from a group called the Puritans in the 16th century. The Puritans wanted to change the Church of England. They wanted to remove practices they thought were not right. Some Puritans were called Separatists because they wanted to leave the main church. Robert Browne is often called the founder of Congregationalism. He lived from 1550 to 1633. He believed a church should only be made of true believers. He also thought the whole congregation should govern the church together.

Many people were part of this early movement. Some leaders, like Henry Barrowe and John Greenwood, faced hard times. They often had to meet in secret or live in other lands like Holland. In 1620, a group called the Pilgrims sailed on the Mayflower. They brought these ideas to North America and started the Plymouth Colony. Later, in 1648, settlers wrote the Cambridge Platform to explain how their churches worked. In 1658, they created the Savoy Declaration. This document is still a very important guide for them today.

Some churches are even in Argentina. In Argentina, German immigrants helped start these churches in the early 1900s. One group moved to places like Villa Ángela and Coronel Du Graty. Even though they are spread out, they share the same ideas. Some of these churches are part of the World Evangelical Congregational Fellowship.
