Free Will Baptists are a group of Christians with unique ideas about faith. They are a sub-group of General Baptists. This group focuses on the idea of free salvation. They also believe in the power of free will. This means they think people have a choice in their faith. They believe God wants to save everyone through Jesus. However, they also believe God gives people the choice to accept or reject this.

This belief system works in a specific way regarding salvation. Free Will Baptists believe that faith is the condition for being saved. They use the idea of being "saved by faith and kept by faith." Some look at the Greek word for "believeth" in the Bible. They see this as a continuous action. This means a person must continue to believe to stay in their faith. They do not believe in the idea that someone is "once saved, always saved." Instead, they believe people must watch and pray to stay faithful.

The history of this group has two main branches in America. The first branch is called the Palmer-line. It started in North Carolina with a man named Paul Palmer. He helped form the Free Will Baptist Church of Chowan in 1727. This group grew through leaders like Joseph Parker. The second branch is called the Randall-line. Benjamin Randall started this movement in the late 18th century. He formed a church in New Durham, New Hampshire, in 1780.

These two branches grew separately for a very long time. The Palmer-line was in the South, and the Randall-line was in the North. They could not join together because of the Civil War and questions about slavery. Finally, they met in Nashville, Tennessee, on November 5, 1935. They organized the National Association of Free Will Baptists to unite. This is now the largest group of Free Will Baptists. There are also other groups like the Original Free Will Baptist Convention.

Free Will Baptists follow certain traditions in their worship. They observe three main things called ordinances. These are baptism, the Lord's Supper, and foot washing. Not all Baptists practice foot washing, but some Free Will Baptists do. They also believe the Bible is the word of God without error. Many members follow rules like teetotalism, which means not drinking alcohol. They also practice voluntary tithing by giving money to the church. Finally, many choose not to work on Sunday, which is the Christian Sabbath.
