His family was very old and served the Tokugawa clan. He began fighting in battles at a very young age. In 1561, he was only 14 years old. At that time, he wanted to earn his own merit. He did not want to rely on others for his success. He even charged into enemy lines to prove his bravery. This showed he was a very determined young man.

He fought in many different types of battles throughout his life. One famous story is from the Battle of Anegawa in 1570. During this fight, Tadakatsu rode his horse alone against 10,000 soldiers. This was a very dangerous and scary moment. His leader, Ieyasu, had to rush to help him.

Later, in 1572, he fought at the Battle of Hitokotosaka. He used a special spear called the Tonbo-giri there. He was also known for wearing a helmet with antlers. These things made him easy for enemies to recognize.

In 1575, Tadakatsu helped win the Battle of Nagashino.

He led a group of musketeers in this fight. Musketeers are soldiers who use guns to fight. His men used a smart way to shoot in turns. This kept the fire going constantly against the enemy. During this battle, he also helped stop a group of soldiers. They were trying to reach the camp of Ieyasu. Tadakatsu used his spear to block their path and protect his leader.

Tadakatsu was a very loyal person to his master. After the death of a leader named Nobunaga in 1582, things became hard. Tadakatsu helped Ieyasu travel through dangerous lands to get home. They had to deal with groups called Ochimusha-gari. These were outlaws who attacked travelers on the road.
