Many people today know him by the name Yukimura. He lived during the Sengoku period, which was a time of many wars. People often called him a hero who might appear only once in a hundred years. Yukimura grew up in a world of changing loyalties. His family originally served the Takeda clan. After the Takeda clan was destroyed in 1582, the Sanada family had to find new leaders. They moved between different strong lands like the Uesugi and the Tokugawa. Eventually, the Sanada family became part of the Toyotomi clan. This history shaped how Yukimura made choices during big battles. He learned how to survive in a very difficult time. His family had to be very smart to stay safe.

In the year 1600, a massive battle called Sekigahara took place. This battle split the Sanada family in two. Yukimura and his father joined the western forces. However, his brother Nobuyuki joined the eastern forces. Some say they did this so the family would survive no matter who won.

Before the big battle, Yukimura helped defend Ueda Castle. He led only 2,000 men against 40,000 soldiers. Even though they were outnumbered, the Sanada held their ground. This success helped them stay famous in history.

Yukimura is most remembered for the Siege of Osaka. This happened in two parts between 1614 and 1615. During the winter campaign, Yukimura built a special fort called Sanada-maru.

He led 7,000 men to defend this earthwork fort. They fought against 30,000 Tokugawa soldiers. The Tokugawa army used 17 European cannons to attack. Even with these big weapons, the Sanada-maru fort was very hard to break. The fighting was intense and lasted for many weeks.

In the summer of 1615, the final battle occurred at Tennōji. Yukimura led a brave charge against a huge Tokugawa army. There were nearly 150,000 Tokugawa soldiers facing his smaller group. Yukimura hoped to break through their lines to help his leaders. Sadly, he died during this fierce fight.
