Homeothermy

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Some animals keep a steady heat inside. This is called homeothermy. It means their body temperature stays the same. It does not change with the air outside.

Other animals are different. They are called poikilotherms. Their body heat goes up and down. This happens when the world around them changes.

Why did homeothermy start? Scientists have many ideas. One idea is about enzymes. Enzymes are tiny parts that make changes in the body. They work best at one steady heat. A steady temperature helps these parts work well.

Another idea is about staying active. Warm bodies can hunt or move for a long time. This helps animals survive. Some think it helped parents keep their young warm. Others think it helped animals live in cold places. Even fur or feathers might have helped. These parts act like a blanket to hold heat in.

There are downsides too. Keeping a steady heat uses a lot of power. In cold weather, animals might need more food to stay warm. If they get too cold, they can die.
