Some animals keep their bodies warmer than the air around them. People often call these animals warm-blooded. Scientists use a more exact term called endothermy. This means the animal uses internal ways to control heat. One way is through metabolism. Metabolism is the way cells break down food to make power. This process also makes heat as a side effect.

Most birds and mammals are homeotherms. This means they keep a stable body temperature. They do not let the outside weather change their internal heat. To stay warm, many animals use insulation. Mammals may have fur or blubber. Birds have feathers to trap heat. If an animal gets too cold, it may shiver. Shivering is when muscles move very fast to make heat.

Animals also need ways to cool down. Many birds and mammals use panting. Some mammals use sweat. Being warm might even help animals stay healthy. Very few fungi can live in warm bodies. This helps protect animals from germs in the wild.
