Some animals do not make much heat inside their own bodies. We call these animals ectotherms.

Instead of making heat, they use the world around them to stay warm. They might sit in the sun to soak up heat. This is called basking.

Many reptiles and insects use basking to get ready for the day. If it gets too hot, they find shade or cool water.

Being an ectotherm has many benefits. These animals do not need as much food as other animals. This is because they have a low metabolic rate. A metabolic rate is how fast a body uses power. Because they use less power, they can wait a long time for food. Some animals even enter a state called torpor. This is a way to slow down or stop their bodies for a while. Torpor can last for one night or even many years. Some small creatures have body temperatures that change with the air. This change is called poikilothermy.

This helps them live in many different places.
