Mesotherm

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Some animals live in a middle way. We call these animals mesotherms.

Most animals are either cold-blooded or warm-blooded. Cold-blooded animals do not make much heat. Warm-blooded animals make heat to stay the same. Mesotherms are in the middle. They make heat inside their bodies. But they do not keep one set temperature. If the air gets cold, they get cold too. Their body heat drops when the world cools down.

Big size helps them stay warm. This is called gigantothermy. Large bodies lose heat very slowly. This happens because they have less surface area for heat to escape.

Many animals are mesotherms. Great white sharks are one kind. Leatherback sea turtles are another. Some bees and naked mole rats are too.

Scientists think dinosaurs might have been mesotherms. They study how fast dinosaurs grew. They also look at fossils. Some fossils show how warm a dinosaur was. Large dinosaurs might have used gigantothermy to stay warm. We are still learning more about them.
