Gigantothermy

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Some very large animals stay warm quite easily. This is called gigantothermy. It is a special way that big bodies hold heat. Large animals have a lot of mass. They have less skin touching the cold air. This means they lose heat very slowly.

Many large reptiles use this trick. Large turtles are good examples. Some scientists think big dinosaurs used it too. These animals are ectotherms. This means they get heat from the world around them. They do not make much heat inside their own bodies.

Being big has some good parts. These animals have a slow metabolic rate. This means their bodies use power slowly. They do not need to eat very often. A crocodile does not eat as much as a lion. A lion must eat more to keep its heat up. A crocodile can just lie in the sun. This helps it digest food and make ATP. ATP is a way for cells to use power. However, being big can make it hard to move fast. These animals may not have much muscle power.
