Mesotherm

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Some animals live in a middle way. We call these animals mesotherms.

Most animals are either cold-blooded or warm-blooded. Cold-blooded animals do not make much heat. Warm-blooded animals make heat to stay the same. Mesotherms are in the middle. They make heat inside their bodies. But they do not keep one set temperature. If the air gets cold, they get cold too. Their body heat drops when the world cools down. This is different from warm-blooded animals. Warm-blooded animals might shiver to stay warm. They use stored energy to keep a constant temperature. Mesotherms do not do this.

There is a special way large mesotherms stay warm. It is called gigantothermy. This happens because of body size. Large animals have a low surface area to volume ratio. This means they lose heat very slowly. As their body size grows, their temperature tends to rise. This is not how warm-blooded animals work. It is a way to use size to hold heat.

People have used this word in different ways. A person named de Candolle used it for plants. He talked about plants that need moderate heat. These plants grow in specific regions. They need a warm month with a certain mean temperature. They also need a cold month with a mean temperature.

We can see mesotherms in many places today. Great white sharks are lamnid sharks that fit this group. Leatherback sea turtles are also mesotherms. You can find them in the ocean. Some species of bees are mesotherms too. Naked mole rats and hyraxes are others. Even the echidna is a mesotherm.

Scientists study if dinosaurs were mesotherms. This is an active area of research. Some researchers looked at how fast dinosaurs grew. They thought growth rates showed an intermediate status. Other scientists like D'Emic disagreed with this. He thought dinosaurs grew like mammals. He thought they were warm-blooded. Now, scientists look at fossil oxygen isotopes. These can show an animal's body temperature. Some studies of theropods and sauropods show support for mesothermy. Large sauropods had high temperatures. This might be from gigantothermy. We need more studies on small dinosaurs to be sure.
