Homeothermy

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Homeothermy is a special way some animals stay warm. It is a type of thermoregulation. This means the animal keeps its internal body temperature stable. The temperature stays the same even if the outside air changes. This internal heat is often higher than the air around it.

Other animals do not do this. They are called poikilotherms. Their body heat goes up and down with the environment. This is the opposite of homeothermy.

How does this work for different creatures? Some animals use their own bodies to stay warm. This is called endothermy. However, some homeotherms use behavior instead. They use behavioral thermoregulation to stay at a steady heat. For example, many reptiles use this way to live. Desert lizards are very good at this. They keep their activity temperatures near a constant level. They stay within one or two degrees of their lethal critical temperatures.

Scientists have many ideas about how homeothermy began. This is called the evolution of homeothermy. One idea is the Metabolic Efficiency Hypothesis. This suggests it helped enzymes work better. Enzymes are tiny parts that run reactions in the body. A steady heat helps these parts work at their best. Another idea is the Endothermic Parental Care Hypothesis. This says it helped parents keep eggs or young offspring warm. This helped more babies survive.

There are many other theories about why this happened. The Activity Level Hypothesis says it helps animals stay active longer. This helps them hunt or escape predators. The Predator-Prey Dynamics idea links it to hunting. Some think it helped animals live in changing climates. Others think it helped animals move to high altitudes. At high altitudes, oxygen levels are lower. Homeothermy might have helped animals use oxygen better.

Being a homeotherm has both good and bad sides. One big plus is using specialized enzymes. These enzymes work best at one specific temperature. Poikilotherms must use more energy to make many different enzymes. But homeothermy is a high energy strategy. It uses a lot of power to keep the heat going. In cold weather, animals must eat more to stay warm. If they cannot find enough food, they might starve. If they get too cold, they can enter torpor or die.
