Highlife is a famous type of music from Ghana. It began in the 1800s near the coast. The music mixes African rhythms with Western jazz sounds.

Musicians often use guitars and brass horns. They use a special way to pluck guitar strings with two fingers. This creates a bright and catchy sound.

In the early days, the name came from fancy clubs. People had to wear top hats to enter. These clubs were for the wealthy class.

Other styles grew from different places. Some music was played in palm-wine bars. This was called palm-wine music. Other styles came from military brass bands.

Highlife spread to many parts of West Africa. It became very popular in Nigeria too. In the 1960s, many people loved Igbo highlife. Later, some Ghanaians moved to Germany. They made a new style called burger highlife. It used modern sounds like disco and synth-pop. Today, people also play gospel highlife in churches. This music helps people feel connected to their home. In 2025, UNESCO named it a special world treasure.
