Highlife is a lively music genre from the coastal cities of Ghana. It started in the 1800s during a time when the area was a British colony. This music is special because it blends African rhythms with Western jazz melodies.

Musicians often use Western instruments like guitars and brass horns to play it. They use a unique two-finger plucking style on the guitar. This style was inspired by the way Kru sailors from Liberia played. The music feels bright and is very fun to dance to.

There are many different ways that highlife can sound. One early style was called palm-wine music. It was played in small bars where workers would gather to drink. This music used portable instruments brought by traders. Another style grew from military brass bands in European forts. Musicians learned marching music but mixed it with local rhythms. This created danceable styles called adaha and konkoma.

The name "highlife" actually comes from the way people used to listen to it. In the early 1920s, certain dance bands played at very fancy clubs. To enter these clubs, people had to pay a high fee. They even had to wear formal clothes like top hats. People outside the clubs called the music "highlife" because they could not join the wealthy crowds inside. Early bands like the Jazz Kings and the Accra Orchestra helped make this name famous.

Many talented musicians helped highlife grow and spread. Jacob Asare was the first Ghanaian to record a highlife song. He recorded "Yaa Amponsah" in London in June 1928. Later, E.T. Mensah became very famous and was called the "King of Highlife." He even played with the great American jazz player Louis Armstrong in 1956. In the 1960s, the music became very popular in Nigeria with the Igbo people.

Highlife continues to change and move around the world. When many Ghanaians moved to Germany, they created "burger highlife." This style mixed highlife with disco and synth-pop sounds. Today, many people also enjoy gospel highlife in religious settings. This music helps people living far from home feel connected to their culture. In 2025, UNESCO recognized highlife as an important part of the world's cultural heritage. It remains a proud symbol of West African music.
