Many people play music to mark big days. They play at weddings or funerals. Music also helps people work. Work songs keep the rhythm for farmers in fields. Women use rhythms while pounding yams.

In the north, the Hausa people use many drums. They play the tambora drum. They also play a long trumpet called the Kakaki. This trumpet can be two meters long.

In the south, the Igbo people play many things. They use a 13-stringed instrument called an obo. The Yoruba people have a great drumming tradition. They use hourglass drums called dundun. A leader uses these drums to "talk."

Music is also part of stories. In Nigerian theater, music sets the mood. Some movies use a style called prefiguring. This uses tunes to hint at what happens next.
