Hezbollah is a powerful Lebanese Shia Islamist organization.

It functions as both a political party and a paramilitary group. The political wing is called the Loyalty to the Resistance Bloc. This group holds 15 seats in the Lebanese Parliament. The paramilitary wing is known as the Jihad Council. The Lebanese government has banned this military wing. Hezbollah is a major part of the "Axis of Resistance." This is a group of allies that includes Iran. The organization is highly influential in the Middle East. It is considered one of the most powerful non-state actors globally.

Hezbollah operates through several different systems. The group maintains a vast social services network. This network includes schools and hospitals for many people. They also run a satellite TV station called Al-Manar. This helps them spread their specific political and religious messages. Politically, they participate in the Lebanese government through their parliamentary bloc. Militarily, they use various tactics to fight their enemies. These tactics include conventional weaponry like Katyusha rockets and missiles. They have also been known to use suicide bombings and assassinations. In 2021, leader Hassan Nasrallah claimed the group had 100,000 fighters.

There are distinct stages in the development of Hezbollah. Initially, it was a revolutionary movement focused on fighting. In the 1980s, it emerged from various Shia factions. These factions were unified by 1,500 instructors from the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps. In 1992, the group entered a new stage called "Lebanonization." This meant they began to participate in national elections. They moved from being purely a revolutionary group to a political one. They also began to engage in dialogue with Lebanese Christians. This shift allowed them to become a permanent part of the Lebanese state structure.

The history of Hezbollah began during the 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon.

This invasion created a massive humanitarian crisis. Many Shia villages were destroyed, and many people lost their homes. The Shia population also felt left out of Lebanese politics. These problems helped the group recruit many new members. Some scholars believe the group formed in 1982. Others say it was an amalgamation of groups until 1985. A key moment occurred on June 8, 1982, in Khalde.

During this battle, Shia militants ambushed an Israeli armored convoy. This event is considered a founding myth for their military wing.

Hezbollah's significance is reflected in its massive military strength. In 2016, its armed strength was like a medium-sized army. Their military capabilities have continued to expand over many years. This growth has caused significant tension within Lebanon. Many people criticize the group's influence on the nation. A 2024 survey found that 55% of Lebanese people have "no trust at all" in Hezbollah. However, the group remains popular among the Shia population. They have been involved in major regional conflicts. These include the 2006 Lebanon War and the Syrian civil war.

Notable examples of Hezbollah's actions include several high-profile attacks. They are believed to be responsible for the 1983 bombings of US and French barracks in Beirut. They were also linked to the 2005 assassination of Rafic Hariri. Because of these actions, many countries view them as a terrorist group. As of October 2020, at least 27 countries had designated them as such. This includes most Western nations.

Since October 2023, Hezbollah has been at war with Israel. This conflict led to an Israeli invasion of Lebanon. During this period, the long-time leader Hassan Nasrallah was assassinated.

Hezbollah's actions connect to broader themes of law and sovereignty. In 2026, Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam stated their military actions were outside Lebanese law. The Lebanese government is currently working on plans to disarm all militias.

In August 2025, the government voted to approve a plan for disarmament. This plan is based on a strategy from the United States. The Lebanese Army was tasked with ensuring the state has total control over weapons. The Homeland Shield Plan is a roadmap for this process. This shows the ongoing struggle between non-state groups and national governments.
