The tooth rows were set slightly inside the mouth. This design suggests they may have had muscular cheeks to hold food. This setup is very similar to how modern mammals or Cretaceous hadrosaurs chew. 
Because they chewed so effectively, their teeth experienced extreme wear. Heterodontosaurids had a very slow tooth replacement rate compared to other dinosaurs. Unlike hadrosaurs, which constantly grew new teeth, these animals had few replacement teeth waiting. To help with chewing, they had a unique spheroidal joint between their jaw bones. This joint allowed the lower jaws to rotate outwards. This movement helped the cheek teeth grind against each other. The high crowns of the teeth helped them last a long time despite this heavy grinding.
Many details of their bodies suggest they were very active animals. Heterodontosaurus was about one meter in length, though some Lycorhinus remains suggest larger individuals. Their hindlimbs were built for speed, with a tibia that was 30% longer than the femur. Their ankle bones were also fused together in a way that looks like modern birds. 
Discovery and naming of these dinosaurs happened over many years. Robert Broom named the genus Geranosaurus in 1911. Sidney Haughton named Lycorhinus in 1924. Alfred Romer later established the family name Heterodontosauridae in 1966. 
One of the most surprising finds involves the dinosaur Tianyulong from China.
