Herpetology is a special branch of zoology. It focuses on studying amphibians and reptiles.

Amphibians include frogs, salamanders, and caecilians. Reptiles include snakes, lizards, turtles, crocodilians, and tuataras.

The name comes from Ancient Greek words. One word means "creeping animal." The other means "study." Scientists call these animals "herps." There are many different kinds to find. There are over 6,700 species of amphibians. There are also over 9,000 species of reptiles.

These animals are ectothermic. This means they are cold-blooded.

They rely on the world to manage their body heat. Herpetologists study how these animals live and grow. They might look at how they act or how they evolve. Some experts focus on just one group. For example, batrachology is the study of frogs. Ophiology is the study of snakes. Saurology is the study of lizards. Cheloniology is the study of turtles. This helps scientists understand the whole world of herps.

People have studied these animals for a long time. The term traces back to Linnaeus. He was a scientist who grouped reptiles and amphibians together. Today, many people share their work in journals. One journal called Copeia started in 1913. It was named after Edward Drinker Cope. Another journal, Herpetologica, began in 1936. A third, Reptiles and amphibians, started in 1990. There was also Contemporary Herpetology, which ran from 1997 to 2009. These writings help scientists share new discoveries.

Herpetology is very important for our planet.

Some amphibians are very sensitive to their homes. If the environment changes, they show it first. This acts as a warning about climate change. These animals also help with human medicine. Some reptiles and amphibians produce toxins or venoms. While these can be deadly, they are also useful. Scientists use some snake venom to make medicine. These medicines help treat strokes and heart attacks.

Working with herps can be a full career. Some people work in labs or do field studies. Others work at museums or in zoos. Most students study biological sciences in college first. Then they apply that knowledge to herpetology. You might even see herpetology on television. Famous showmen like Steve Irwin have shared these animals with the world. Many people also enjoy it as a hobby. These amateur scientists often call themselves "herpers." They enjoy finding the many different species in nature.
