Scientists who study these animals are called herpetologists. They look at how these animals live and grow. They also study how they act.

These animals are ectothermic. This means they are cold-blooded. They rely on the world to stay warm. Herpetologists can help people in many ways. Some reptiles and amphibians have toxins or venoms. These can be dangerous. However, some snake venoms help make medicine. Doctors use them to treat heart attacks and strokes.

Herpetologists also watch how animals react to the world. Some amphibians are very sensitive to change. If the environment changes, these animals show it first. This acts as a warning about the climate. Many people enjoy this work as a hobby. They often call themselves herpers.
