Heinrich Kramer was a German man who lived a long time ago. He was a member of the Dominican Order. This was a group of religious men. He also served as an inquisitor. An inquisitor was someone who looked for people breaking religious rules. He is famous for writing a very well-known book. This book was called the Malleus Maleficarum. In English, this name means "The Hammer of Witches."

Kramer's book was published in 1487. It described ideas about witchcraft. It also gave many steps for how to find and punish people accused of magic. Because of this book, many witch trials began during the early modern period. The book even included a special paper from Pope Innocent VIII. This paper was called a papal bull. It was called Summis desiderantes and came out in 1484. It said that witches did exist and gave power to the inquisition to find them.

Kramer's life had many different parts. He was born in Schlettstadt in the Holy Roman Empire. Today, we call that place Sélestat in France. He joined his religious order when he was very young. He even became a leader in his home town. Before 1474, he was an inquisitor for several places. These places included Tyrol, Salzburg, Bohemia, and Moravia. He was known for being a very good speaker in church.

Not everyone agreed with how Kramer worked. In the city of Innsbruck, he faced hard jobs. A woman named Helena Scheuberin was accused of witchcraft. She was a woman who spoke her mind. She even said that Kramer was an evil man. A bishop named Georg Golser did not like how Kramer handled these trials. The bishop thought Kramer was making claims that were not proven. In 1486, the bishop told Kramer to leave his area.

Even after those problems, Kramer stayed very busy. He went to Venice in 1495 to give public talks. He wrote many other books about the church. One was called The Shield of Defence of the Holy Roman Church. In 1500, Pope Alexander VI gave him a new job. He worked in Bohemia and Moravia as a special messenger. He spent his final years writing and preaching. He died in Kroměříž in 1505.
