The Spanish Inquisition was a powerful religious court in Spain.

It was authorized by Pope Sixtus IV in 1478. The main goal was to maintain Catholic orthodoxy. This means making sure people followed the official church teachings. It also became a tool for the state to hold power.

The Inquisition replaced an older system that was controlled by the Pope. This new version gave more control to the Spanish monarchs. It changed how the government and the church worked together.

The court worked through a strict system of rules.

In 1484, Tomás de Torquemada created a code of 28 articles. These rules guided how the inquisitors acted. People were often accused by their own neighbors. The court looked for specific signs of different religious practices. For example, they watched for no chimney smoke on Saturdays. They also looked at what kind of food people bought. The trials often aimed to get people to confess their beliefs.

The history of these tensions in Spain goes back a long time.

Long before 1478, many groups faced hard times. In the year 613, a decree demanded conversion or expulsion for Jews. Later, in the 1300s, riots caused many people to flee. By 1478, King Ferdinand II and Queen Isabella I wanted to cleanse the land of heresy. They appointed the first inquisitors, Miguel de Morillo and Juan de San Martín, in 1480. This led to a period of very intense religious control.

Many different people were affected by the Inquisition's actions.

The court primarily targeted conversos, who were people converted from Judaism or Islam. In 1492, royal decrees ordered Jews and Muslims to convert or leave. This led to the expulsion of an estimated 40,000 to 100,000 Jews. Modern estimates say about 150,000 people were prosecuted in total. Between 3,000 and 5,000 people were executed, mostly by burning. Other punishments included prison, exile, or losing all their property.

The Inquisition eventually spread far beyond the borders of Spain.

It reached into Southern Italy, including Sicily and Sardinia. It also moved to the Americas, with tribunals in places like Mexico City and Lima, Peru. The court targeted many different ideas, including Protestantism and witchcraft. One famous part of this was the auto-da-fé. This was a public ceremony where the accused were paraded. Sentences were read aloud to the public. After these events, the guilty were handed over to civil authorities for punishment.
