It was the first service like this in the United States. People pay a monthly fee to use it. This lets them watch movies without any ads.

An executive named Charles Dolan helped start the service. He wanted a way to bring movies into people's homes. HBO first launched on November 8, 1972. Its very first show was a hockey game. After the game, it showed a movie.

HBO was also the first channel to use satellites. This helped the service grow across the whole country. Later, it added more channels to give people choices. These are called multiplex channels.
