In the early years, the channel focused on learning. It showed films about nature and science. It also showed films about history. Many of these films were new to U.S. television.

Later, the channel changed its shows. It began to show reality television. These are shows about real life and jobs. Some shows focus on cars. Other shows focus on people at work. One very popular event is Shark Week. It happens every summer.

Discovery is now a very big brand. It is available in 409 million homes around the world. It has many sister networks. Some of these networks speak different languages. For example, Discovery en Español is for Spanish speakers. The channel also has a website for fans. It even helped build a large telescope. This is called the Lowell Discovery Telescope. The channel uses a globe in its logo. This shows that the brand is for the whole world.
