Their first show was called SportsCenter. It was a news program about sports.

In the 1980s, ESPN grew very fast. It began showing college basketball games. This helped make "March Madness" famous. In 1984, the ABC company bought ESPN. This gave the network more money. With this help, ESPN could buy the rights to show big games. This means they paid to be the only ones to show certain sports on TV.

In 1987, ESPN reached a big goal. They started showing NFL games on Sunday nights. These were called primetime games. This made ESPN a top rival to other big TV channels. Today, ESPN has many parts. They have radio stations and a streaming service called ESPN+. They even make films about sports history.
