The Primetime Emmy Awards honor great work on American TV.

These awards are given by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. They recognize excellence in primetime shows. Primetime means shows that air between 6:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m.

There are three main types of awards. The first honors top shows like comedies and dramas. The Creative Arts Emmys honor work behind the scenes. This includes jobs like costume design or hair styling. The third type honors engineering and new technology.

Winners receive a special statue. The trophy is made of copper, nickel, silver, and gold. It takes five and a half hours to make one. Each statue weighs six pounds and twelve ounces.

The first ceremony was in 1949. Back then, it only gave out six awards. It started with shows from Los Angeles. Soon, it grew to honor shows across the whole country. Today, the awards include shows from cable and streaming services. This helps honor many different ways people watch TV.
