Home Box Office, commonly known as HBO, is a major American premium television network.

It serves as the flagship property of Home Box Office, Inc., which is a subsidiary of Warner Bros. Discovery. HBO is defined as a premium service because it operates on a subscription model. This means customers pay an extra monthly fee to access its content. Unlike traditional television, premium channels do not accept standard advertising. They also present programming without editing for objectionable material. This model allows the network to focus on high-quality, uninterrupted entertainment.

The service offers a wide variety of programming. This includes theatrically released motion pictures and original television programs. It also features made-for-cable movies, documentaries, comedy, and concert specials. To provide even more depth, the service includes periodic interstitial programs. These are short films or making-of documentaries that bridge larger shows. Today, HBO content is the centerpiece of the Max streaming platform. Max is an expanded service that shares management with Home Box Office, Inc. It also features content from other Warner Bros. Discovery properties.

The history of HBO began with a vision to change cable television. In 1971, cable executive Charles Dolan was looking for ways to make his company, Sterling Manhattan, profitable. While on vacation in France, he developed a proposal for a cable-originated channel. He called this concept "The Green Channel." The goal was to offer unedited movies and live sports without advertising. On November 2, 1971, Time Inc.'s board approved the idea. They provided Dolan with a $150,000 development grant. The name Home Box Office was eventually chosen to suggest a "ticket" to movies at home.

HBO officially launched on November 8, 1972. Its first broadcast took place in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. The inaugural event was a National Hockey League game between the New York Rangers and the Vancouver Canucks. Immediately following the game, the first movie aired. It was the 1971 film *Sometimes a Great Notion*, starring Paul Newman and Henry Fonda. At the time, only 365 subscribers could watch the broadcast. Since that night, HBO has grown into a global leader in television.

One of HBO's most important innovations was the use of multiplexing. In August 1991, HBO and Cinemax became the first premium services to offer complimentary multiplexed channels. Multiplexing means providing several different channels to a single subscriber. This was intended to give viewers more choices, similar to a multi-screen movie theater. Over time, the network expanded its suite of channels. HBO Family launched in December 1996 to focus on content for younger children.

The network uses several different channel types to organize its vast library. Some channels are thematic, meaning they focus on a specific genre. For example, HBO Drama provides serious storytelling.

HBO Hits offers a different selection of films. The service also operates six 24-hour linear multiplex channels. These channels are transmitted on both Eastern and Pacific Time Zone schedules. This ensures that viewers in different parts of the country can watch programs at appropriate times. A Pacific feed can act as a timeshift channel for viewers in other time zones.

The scale of HBO's reach is massive. In the United States, the programming was available to approximately 35.656 million households with multichannel subscriptions. This gave HBO the largest subscriber total of any American premium channel. Beyond the U.S., the service has a significant global presence. It distributes content to at least 151 countries worldwide. This results in an estimated 140 million cumulative subscribers globally. HBO remains a vital part of the modern media landscape through its mix of traditional cable and digital streaming.
