Hardiness zone

earth science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Have you ever wondered why certain plants grow well in one yard but die in another? The secret often lies in a concept called a hardiness zone. A hardiness zone is a geographic area defined by its average annual minimum temperature. This is the coldest temperature a place usually reaches in a year. Knowing this helps gardeners pick plants that can survive the winter.

If a plant is hardy to zone 10, it can withstand that specific level of cold. This measurement is a vital tool for anyone working with nature.

How does this system actually work? Most people use the system made by the United States Department of Agriculture, or USDA. The USDA defines 13 different zones based on long-term extreme minimum temperatures. They use a special dataset of weather data to make these maps.

To find a zone, scientists look at the lowest temperature recorded in an area during a given year. Some systems also look at heat zones. These use the average number of days when temperatures stay above a certain high point.

People have been mapping these zones for a long time. The first attempts were made by researchers at the Arnold Arboretum in Boston. Alfred Rehder published a system in 1927, and Donald Wyman followed in 1938. The modern USDA system began at the US National Arboretum in Washington. Its first map was issued in 1960 and revised in 1965.

In 2012, the USDA added zones 12 and 13 to help with tropical plants. Most recently, they released a new map in November 2023 using data from 1991 to 2020.

There are many interesting facts about where these zones are located. In the United States, the warmest zones are in the deep south and on the Pacific coast. Hawaii can reach zone 12, while Puerto Rico reaches zone 13.

The coldest zones are found in the far north. Alaska has zones as low as 1. In the 48 contiguous states, the Florida Keys are the warmest at zone 11b. Meanwhile, north-central Minnesota is the coldest at zone 2b. Even cities like Fairbanks, Alaska, are known as the coldest city with over 10,000 people.

It is important to remember that zones are not the only thing plants need. A plant's survival also depends on sunlight, rainfall, and humidity. Even the amount of snow cover matters. Sometimes, a small area has its own special weather called a microclimate.

Trees can act as wind breaks or provide shade. This can allow a plant to thrive in a place where it might not normally grow. A garden can be very different from the big map nearby.
