Growing season

earth science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

A growing season is a special part of the year. It is when local conditions allow plants to grow normally. These conditions include things like rainfall, temperature, and daylight. The way a plant grows depends on its own biology. However, most seasons can be grouped into larger environmental classes. The tilt of the Earth also affects these seasons across the globe.

Geography plays a huge role in how long a season lasts. Latitude is a major factor in this process. Latitude is the distance from the equator. Far from the equator, the Sun stays low in the sky. This low angle means sunlight is less direct. Because of this, soil takes longer to warm up in the spring. This makes the growing season start later. Altitude also matters because high places are cooler.

Different places have very different growing times. In the United States, the seasons change by location. North of the 45th parallel, the season is four to five months long. This area has warm summers and cold, snowy winters. South of the 30th parallel, many areas have year-round seasons. In the desert Southwest, the season happens in the winter. This is because summer heat is too extreme for many plants.

Europe also shows how geography changes things. The Pyrenees, Alps, and Southern Carpathians divide the continent. Southern Europe is mostly south of the 45th parallel. There, growing seasons last six months or more. Northern Europe has much shorter seasons. In the highlands of Scandinavia and Russia, it may be only three months. However, summer days in the north can last 17 hours or more. This extra light helps plants grow quickly.

In some warm places, water is the main limit. In tropical or desert climates, a dry season can stop growth. People can use irrigation to help plants. Irrigation is a way to bring water to dry land. This can allow plants to grow all year long. In places like Indonesia, a rainy season can also interrupt growth. This happens to coffee beans during their growing cycle. In Colombia, coffee can be harvested all year.
