Growing season

earth science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

A growing season is a part of the year. During this time, plants can grow well. They need the right rain, heat, and light.

Where you live changes how long this lasts. Latitude is a big factor. Latitude is how far you are from the middle of the Earth. Far from the middle, the sun stays low in the sky. This means the soil takes longer to warm up. This makes the season start later. High places also have cool air. This can make the season short.

In the United States, seasons change by location. North of the 45th parallel, the season is four to five months long. South of the 30th parallel, many areas have a year-round season. In some hot deserts, the season is in the winter. This is because the summer is too hot.

In some warm places, water is the main limit. A dry season can stop plants from growing. People can use irrigation to help. Irrigation is a way to bring water to plants. This can help plants grow all year long.
