Dry season

earth science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The dry season is a time of low rainfall. This happens mostly in the tropics. A rain belt moves across the Earth each year. This belt carries rain from north to south. When the belt is in the south, the north is dry. This lasts from November to March. From May to September, the belt moves north. Then the southern tropics have a dry season.

During this time, the air is not humid. Humidity is how much water is in the air. Some rivers and watering holes may dry up. This can cause bushfires. Many animals must move to find food and water. This includes elephants, zebras, and giraffes.

In the Amazon, plants show a big change. Some trees grow 25% more leaves in the dry season. This happens in parts of the forest that are not disturbed. The roots reach deep to find rainwater. This extra growth helps the forest make more water. This water then helps start the wet season.
