He lived during the Tang dynasty, which was a famous time in Chinese history. People often compare his skill to great writers like Shakespeare or Dante. He was not just a writer, but also a government official and a scholar. Han Yu cared deeply about his country and its traditions. He worked hard to protect the ideas of Confucianism. Han Yu changed the way people wrote their essays. Before him, many writers used a style called pianwen. This style was very fancy and used many decorated words. Han Yu thought this was too complicated for sharing big ideas. He led a movement to use a new style called guwen. Guwen means "ancient writing," but it was actually a fresh way to write. He wanted his prose to be clear, simple, and logical. This helped people focus on the actual meaning of the words.

His life was full of many different jobs and travels. He was born in 768 in a place called Heyang. His family was noble, but his father died when Han was only two. Han Yu had to study very hard to pass the jinshi exam. This was a very difficult test for government jobs. He worked in many different cities, like Chang'an and Luoyang. Sometimes his work was hard, and he was even sent away to a far place called Chaozhou. He was a brave man who spoke his mind to powerful leaders.

One famous moment happened when he wrote a letter to the emperor.

This letter was about a Buddhist relic, which is a special object from a holy person. Han Yu wrote a "Memorial on Bone-relics of the Buddha." He told the emperor that Buddhism was a foreign belief. He believed it did not fit with Chinese culture and laws. This made the emperor very angry, and Han Yu was punished. Even though he faced hard times, he later returned to work in the capital. He eventually held a high-ranking job in the War Office.

Han Yu was also known for being a wonderful teacher. He loved to help his students learn new things. He was very strict because he wanted them to be perfect. However, he also told jokes and recited poems to them. His students loved his classes so much they did not want to go home. He taught that anyone can learn from a teacher, no matter their age. Han Yu died in the year 824 at the age of fifty-six. His ideas helped shape Chinese culture for hundreds of years.
