He lived during the Tang dynasty. He was a scholar and a government official. Han Yu is known as a master of prose. Prose is a type of writing that is not poetry.

He wanted to change how people wrote. Many writers used very fancy and decorated styles. Han Yu led a movement to change this. He used a style called guwen, which means "ancient writing."

This style was clear and simple. It helped people share big ideas more easily. His way of writing stayed popular for a long time.

Han Yu was also a strong thinker. He loved the ideas of Confucianism. He spoke up for these beliefs. He even wrote a letter to the emperor to protest Buddhism. This was very brave. The emperor was angry and sent Han Yu away to a far place. Later, Han Yu returned to work in the capital.

He was a wonderful teacher, too. He loved to teach his students. He often told jokes to them. His students enjoyed his lessons so much they did not want to leave. Han Yu died in the year 824. People still honor his memory today.
