H.O.T. was a famous boy band from South Korea. Their name stands for Highfive of Teenagers. They are known as the very first K-pop idol group. This group created a successful formula for music. Many K-pop groups that came later followed their model.

They were a huge social sensation in their home country. The group had five members. These were Moon Hee-joon, Jang Woo-hyuk, Tony Ahn, Kangta, and Lee Jae-won. They sold over 6.4 million records in South Korea alone. They also became stars in China and Taiwan. This helped start the Korean Wave across Asia.

Making the group was a very careful process. Lee Soo-man started SM Entertainment to form the band. He used polls from high school students to learn what they liked. He wanted to know what an ideal idol group would be.

Kangta was the first member chosen after being found at an amusement park. Moon Hee-joon and Lee Jae-won joined next as friends. Jang Woo-hyuk joined after winning a dance contest. Finally, Tony Ahn joined after an audition in Los Angeles. This mix of talents helped them succeed quickly.

Their music journey began in the mid-1990s. They made their first public appearance in August 1996. Their TV debut happened on September 7, 1996. They performed "Descendants of Warriors" on a show called Saturday! Saturday Is Fun.

Their first album sold 1.5 million copies. Their song "Candy" was a happy pop song that made them very popular. In 1997, their second album, Wolf and Sheep, sold 1 million copies in just ten days. They won many big awards like the Grand Prize at the Seoul Music Awards. They even earned a nomination at the 1998 MTV Video Music Awards.

As they grew, they tried many different styles of music. Their third album, Resurrection, featured hardcore hip hop. It sold more than 1.1 million copies by 1999.

In 1999, they released I Yah!. This album was about a tragic fire at the Sealand Youth Training Center. It sold over 1.3 million copies. They also became the first K-pop group to play at the Seoul Olympic Stadium. Over 40,000 fans watched them perform there. They even performed with Michael Jackson at a benefit concert in Seoul.

In 2001, the group faced a difficult time. They had a disagreement with SM Entertainment about a new contract. This disagreement was about how much the members were paid.

Because of this, the group broke up. Hundreds of fans held protests to show their support. The members all went on to have solo careers. Many years later, they reunited for a special TV show in 2018. They also held massive reunion concerts. One concert in Seoul had 100,000 people attend! They even performed together again in 2025.
