Hạ Long

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Hạ Long is a significant coastal city in the Quảng Ninh province of Vietnam. It sits along the shores of the famous Hạ Long Bay. The city is located about 160 km northeast of Hà Nội. It is also 60 km east of Hải Phòng. To the south, the city borders the Gulf of Tonkin. The city's land stretches along 50 km of the bay's coastline. This location makes it a strategic hub for regional security and economic growth.

The city is divided into two distinct geographic and functional parts. The eastern section is known as Hòn Gai. This area contains most of the industrial infrastructure and government offices. The western section is known as Bãi Cháy. This part of the city serves as the primary area for tourism. A large cable-stayed bridge connects these two sides. Before this bridge was built, a ferry line served as the main transport hub. That ferry line was so important that it was awarded Hero of the People's Armed Forces three times.

Human history in this region reaches back to the Stone Age. Archaeologists have identified three distinct ancient cultures here. These are known as the Soi Nhụ, Hạ Long, and Cái Bèo cultures. Researchers believe these groups make the bay a cradle of mankind. The heartland of the modern city was once a small fishing village called Bãi Hàu. During the Nguyễn Dynasty, it was renamed Mẫu Lệ. In 1883, the French began mining coal along the coast. They named some islands Hòn Gai, which may be a French deviation of the name.

The political history of the area involved many changes in administration. In 1963, the Vietnamese government merged Hải Ninh and Hồng Quảng provinces. This created the modern Quảng Ninh province, with Hòn Gai as its capital. Hòn Gai provided coal for all industrial zones in North Vietnam. Because it was a gateway to China, it was often targeted by U.S. forces during the Vietnam War. On December 27, 1993, the city was officially established. This happened when Hòn Gai was renamed Hạ Long and merged with Bãi Cháy.

Economically, the city has undergone a major transformation. For a long time, the economy relied heavily on coal mining. However, the city shifted its focus toward tourism in 2012. This change was driven by the massive number of visitors to Hạ Long Bay. The economy is now organized into five specific areas. These include trading, industry, seaports, tourism, and agriculture. In 2002, the city's GDP was 1,6669.7 billion VND. At that time, tourism and services made up 53% of that value. The city also hosts 1,470 units for industry and handicrafts.

Infrastructure plays a vital role in the city's connection to the rest of Asia. In 2007, a $400 million deal was signed at the Vietnam-China Business Forum. This deal was to build a highway to the border city of Móng Cái. Construction began in 2015 and was completed in 2022. This road helps Hạ Long serve as a destination on the path to southern China. Additionally, the Van Don International Airport serves the city and the wider province. The airport is located about 50 km east of Hạ Long.

Visitors to the city can find many diverse sites and natural wonders. Mount Bài Thơ is a famous limestone peak in the south. It has a nearly vertical face facing the sea. This mountain is rich in biodiversity and was visited by many local poets. Other notable locations include Tuần Châu island and the Quảng Ninh Museum. In the Hòn Gai area, there is an active Catholic church on a hill.
